The Plan Assumes Next Quarter Looks Like This One

What happens when your plan assumes next quarter looks like this one?
The Fix Founders Usually Reach For
The common response is more forecasting. A finer model, a longer spreadsheet, a monthly reforecast. This sharpens the estimate and does nothing for the response, because the problem was never the accuracy of the prediction. It was the absence of a pre-agreed move for the day the prediction missed.
The Real Cause
A plan without a response rule concentrates every surprise into one place. With no owner and no trigger defined in advance, the shock travels up the organisation until it reaches the one person who can decide anything, which is the founder. The structure guarantees the bottleneck. This is not a function of how strong or willing the founder is.
What the Fix Looks Like
The direction is a short, owned set of responses to the shocks most likely to arrive. Name the three or four events that would hurt most: a key input moving sharply, a major client delaying, a channel closing. For each, decide the response and the owner while the room is calm. Agree the trigger that fires it. The output is a single page a leadership team can hold in its head, not a thick plan.
This is where scenario planning earns its place. Not as a forecasting ritual, but as a small inventory of decisions made before they are urgent, covering the demand shocks and supply risk a founder-led firm is most exposed to.
The Principle
Resilience is a set of choices made in advance and handed to people who will act without waiting for permission. A business that can answer who responds, and how, before a shock arrives is simply better organised than its peers.
A forecast predicts. A rule responds. The firms that come through hard years intact are usually the ones that decided early and wrote it down.
